Everything You Should Know About Public Clouds

A cloud is where you store your data in a remote server, which you can access anytime. There are two types of clouds: public and private clouds. The difference between the two is the host of the cloud. The public cloud is controlled by a third-party provider which serves many customers through the internet. Examples include AWS Free Tier, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. In contrast, a public cloud is totally controlled by the organization that made it, and no outsider has the authorization to access their data.

This article will only focus on the public cloud by knowing its advantages and disadvantages. Hopefully, we can help you expand your knowledge in this form of technology and aid in your decision-making.

Advantages of Public Cloud

1. Low Costs

The only expense you will pay is the cost of the cloud services used. The third-party service provider already shoulders the fees needed to maintain the cloud. These may include setup costs such as expensive software or hardware. As for the maintenance and staffing costs, you don’t need an IT team to manage the cloud since the provider has already taken care of it.

2. Scalability and Availability

Public clouds are often on a large scale because they provide their services to multiple customers. The providers have the necessary components needed to keep up. In connection with this, public clouds have the auto-scaling feature, which means that clouds can automatically control computational data activity, depending on the current workload. The purpose of this feature is to still provide their services to meet the demands of their users.

For example, an airline announced a flight promo, and many people are waiting and anticipating purchasing tickets on their website online. The website might probably crash due to the sudden influx. However, the auto-scaling feature saves the day by adjusting its capacity to carry on.

Disadvantages of Public Cloud

3. Data Security

For many firms, the security and privacy of the data stored in a public cloud service is still an issue. The public cloud utilizes the internet for data storage and other services. Since your servers are accessible from anywhere in the globe by the internet, anyone can use them!

Due to multiple customers in the cloud, the security provided might not be sufficient for highly confidential data. There is a minimal risk of a breach between users on a public network. Still, misuse by outsiders and cybercriminals can put yours at risk because an attack on the primary server creates a breach for every client’s system.

In addition, each country or region has different laws, rules, and regulations about data privacy and security.

4. No Customization

As mentioned earlier, you don’t need to worry about managing the cloud because the provider already takes care of that task. With this, the cloud is already in a standard format, and you have little to no option or control in customizing it. All of the users of the cloud share the same infrastructure. If your business has a specific need in a cloud, it might not fulfill it because of the one-size-fits-all fashion.

Conclusion

Public clouds may be enticing due to low costs, scalability, and availability. However, it would be best if you also considered its drawbacks which are security and customization concerns. Knowing these significant points are essential in your decision-making process.

Picking the best cloud service for your business may make or break your success. The best thing to do is to know your business needs and consider your assets. From that, you will be able to define the factors and qualities you need in a cloud service with the optimal cost. It is crucial to research the service and various alternatives before availing of them. If you choose to deal with a third-party cloud provider, fully understand the kind of service you will get for your hard-earned money.
