I was recently asked to create a website for a company I was working on. It was a small time-shifting company that focused entirely on online marketing and email blasts. My first thought was simple and straightforward; the website needed to be built using a responsive design, which would allow for the website to adapt to the size of the device it was viewed on.

Responsive design is great for small devices, but I have to admit I am not really a big fan of the term. The design and layout of a responsive website is a bit of a puzzle, and it’s not always clear what is going on behind the scenes to get it to work properly on all devices.

For example, the website that you see below had a bunch of buttons, and the ones that you see below are probably just blank. The reason I don’t see any buttons in the website is because the website just has just a bunch of pictures. The problem is that the buttons are really designed to keep the user from having to click through the pictures.

As it turns out, the picture that you see below is the only button on the website. It’s a picture of a doorbell and a camera. It’s so clearly designed to do one thing, and only do one thing, that you can’t help but click to see what it is.

Although people are making use of the website, the design of the page is making it a little tricky to navigate. The buttons are there so you can click on them.
