opt out is an expression of resistance to a situation, a refusal to take part. An opt-out is an act of non-participation.
opt-out is a very specific thing. It can mean anything from saying no to not participating in a situation to simply going along with it to not being there. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a physical action. If you are not physically present in a situation in the sense that you are not physically at the location of the event, then your presence in the situation, even if you’re not physically present at the event, can still be meaningful by being there.
I have been asked a lot by writers and artists who are interested in the writing and/or visual arts, “so are you going to create a website for us?” I just tell them this: No. There is a difference between a website and a physical or digital piece of art; and no website is worth more than one, or even two, of a digital piece of art.
The thing is, if this event takes place on a physical piece of land, then yes, if you’re not physically there, then your presence is definitely a part of the event. But if you aren’t physically there, then your absence won’t have meaning unless you go to the event, and then it will have meaning only if you go back to the event.
